Cessna 208 seaplane lucky accident in Sri Lanka

The incident happened two days ago at a lake. I have a short video about it.

The Cessna 208 amphibious seaplane with floats was piloted by only two pilots. It could have been a training flight or they had come to pick up passengers, as there were many in the harbor. The Cessna seaplane was taking on water at high speed and the floats were angled downwards. The opposite is desirable for a successful landing. The floats could not handle the maneuvers, they broke off and therefore they landed nose down in the shallow water.

The cover photo also shows that rescue services arrived immediately, and the pilots were taken to hospital with injuries. According to the police statement, the changing direction and strength of the wind may have also played a role in the accident.

Local airline Cinnamon Air flies three Cessna 208 Caravan aircraft to various tourist destinations on the island. Two of them are amphibious seaplanes equipped with floats.

They fly to many places, to smaller airports or to the water. I underlined the lake where the accident happened in black. This image shows the time advantage of seaplane or conventional flight over a car.

We hope that the Cessna seaplane can be repaired and will soon be flying tourists to the island’s beautiful landscapes again. And people are very interested in seaplane flight, they were originally going to film a simple landing and docking. Unfortunately, that’s not what they got.
